The 15-Minute Quarterly Subscription Audit (Checklist)

Walk through a 15-minute checklist every quarter to catch forgotten charges before they drain $400 from your account.

Most people don’t know what they’re paying for each month. You signed up for a free trial eighteen months ago, and now it’s quietly billing you $14.99 every four weeks. A quick subscription audit can fix that. Set a timer for fifteen minutes, grab your last three bank or credit card statements, and walk through the checklist below. You’ll spot charges you forgot about, pause services you barely use, and redirect that money somewhere it actually matters.

Why quarterly beats once a year

An annual review sounds reasonable until you realize how much slips through in twelve months. A $9.99 app you forgot about costs you roughly $120 before your next yearly check. Do that across three or four forgotten subscriptions and you’re looking at $400 to $500 gone before you even notice.

Quarterly reviews shrink that window to about ninety days. Three months of a $9.99 charge is $30, not $120. You catch things faster, cancel sooner, and keep more of your paycheck.

There’s a practical reason, too: most subscription services lock you into monthly or annual billing cycles. If you review every quarter, you’ll almost always catch an annual renewal before it hits. You get a chance to cancel or downgrade before the charge goes through, not after.

A quarterly rhythm also lines up well with life changes. New season, new habits. Maybe you binged that streaming service over winter but haven’t opened it since March. A quarterly check gives you permission to pause without guilt.

Here’s how the math stacks up for a single forgotten subscription:

Review Frequency Months Before You Catch It Wasted at $9.99/mo
    Monthly 1 $9.99
    Quarterly 3 $29.97
    Annually 12 $119.88

Quarterly hits the sweet spot: frequent enough to save real money, rare enough that it doesn’t feel like a chore. Fifteen minutes, four times a year, sixty minutes total. That’s less time than most people spend choosing what to watch on a Friday night.

Step 1: pull every recurring charge from three statements

Open your bank app, credit card app, or online portal. Pull up the last three monthly statements. You need three months because some subscriptions bill every other month or on odd cycles.

    What to look for

Scan each statement for charges that repeat. Look for company names you recognize and ones you don’t. Payment processors sometimes use parent company names, so a charge from “GOOG*YouTubePremium” or “AMZN Digital” might not be obvious at first glance.

Write every recurring charge in a simple list. Use a notes app, a spreadsheet, or a piece of paper. Each entry needs three things:

    • Service name (Netflix, Spotify, iCloud, gym, etc.)
    • Amount billed
    • Billing frequency (monthly, quarterly, annual)

Don’t forget these common hiding spots

Some charges are easy to miss:

    • App store subscriptions: Check your iPhone’s Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions. Google Play has a similar page.
    • Annual renewals: Domain registrations, antivirus software, cloud storage upgrades. These hit once a year and vanish from memory.
    • Family plans: You might be paying for a family plan where only one person still uses the service.
    • Free trials that converted: That meditation app or meal-kit box you tried months ago.

If you use Amppfy, your subscriptions list already shows next-charge dates, which makes this step faster. But any method works as long as you capture every recurring charge.

Your goal by the end of this step: one complete list. No charge left behind. This is the foundation of your audit checklist, and it should take about five minutes.

Step 2: the keep, pause, cancel decision

Now you’ve got your list. Go through each subscription and sort it into one of three buckets: keep, pause, or cancel. This is the core of any subscription audit checklist, and it works best when you’re honest with yourself.

    The three-bucket framework

Ask yourself one question per subscription: “Did I use this in the last thirty days?”

    Answer Action Example
Yes, regularly Keep Streaming service you watch weekly
Yes, but rarely Pause or downgrade A music app you opened twice last month
No Cancel That language-learning app from January

    A few nuances worth considering:

    • Pause over cancel when possible. Many services let you pause for one to three months. Spotify, Hulu, and several gym chains offer this. You keep your account history and playlists but stop paying.
    • Downgrade before you cancel. Some services have cheaper tiers. You might not need the premium plan if the basic one covers what you actually use.
    • Check for overlap. Two streaming services might carry the same shows. Two cloud storage plans might be redundant if one gives you enough space.

    Couples: coordinate before you cut

If you share expenses with a partner, don’t cancel something they use daily. A quick text takes ten seconds: “Hey, do you still watch Paramount+?” That small check prevents a surprised partner and a re-subscription fee.

This step should take about five minutes. Be decisive. If you hesitate on something for more than fifteen seconds, put it in the “pause” column and revisit next quarter.

Step 3: note the renewal dates on your calendar

Canceling is only half the job. The other half is making sure annual renewals don’t sneak up on you next quarter. Pull out your phone’s calendar and set reminders.

    What to calendar

For every subscription you kept or paused, add a calendar event seven days before the next billing date. Seven days gives you enough runway to cancel or downgrade if your situation changes. Here’s what each reminder should include:

    • Subscription name and cost
    • Whether you planned to keep, pause, or re-evaluate
    • A direct link to the cancellation page (paste it right in the calendar note so you don’t have to hunt for it later)

Annual subscriptions deserve special attention. A $99 or $149 annual charge is easy to forget about for eleven months. Set two reminders for annual plans: one thirty days before renewal and one seven days before.

    A system that runs itself

Once you’ve done this for one quarter, the next quarter gets easier. Your calendar already has the dates. You just review the reminders as they pop up and decide whether to keep paying.

If you track bills and subscriptions in Amppfy, next-charge dates are already listed for you. The app sends a heads-up the day before a bill hits, so you have a built-in reminder without extra calendar work.

The point isn’t which tool you use. The point is that future-you sees the charge coming before it lands.

Step 4: recalculate what the cuts give back per paycheck

This is where the audit pays off, literally. Add up every subscription you canceled or paused. Divide by your pay frequency to see how much you just freed up per paycheck.

    A worked example

    Say you cut three subscriptions:

    • Streaming service: $15.99/mo
    • Cloud storage upgrade: $9.99/mo
    • Fitness app: $19.99/mo

    Total monthly savings: $45.97

    If you’re paid biweekly (26 paychecks a year), that’s $45.97 × 12 ÷ 26 = roughly $21.22 back per paycheck. Over a full year, that’s $551.64.

That’s real money. Not life-changing on its own, but enough to fund a savings goal, cover a bill you’ve been stretching to reach, or simply give you more breathing room before your next payday.

    Put the savings somewhere specific

Don’t let the freed-up cash dissolve into general spending. Redirect it. A few options:

    • Add it to your safety cushion. If you keep a buffer between paychecks, bump it up.
    • Fund a savings goal. Even $21 per paycheck adds up to over $550 a year.
    • Pay down a balance. Apply it to a credit card or loan payment.

    Here’s what that looks like in simple Safe-to-Spend math: $3,412 cash − $1,194 bills (down from $1,240 after cancellations) − $400 savings − $500 cushion = $1,318. That’s $46 more breathing room each month.

The key is making the savings visible. If you can see the number change, you feel the progress. That feeling is what makes the next quarterly audit worth doing.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a subscription audit actually take?
About fifteen minutes if you have your statements handy. The first time might run closer to twenty because you’re building your list from scratch. After that, each quarterly review is faster because you’re just updating an existing list, not creating one.

What if I cancel something and want it back later?
Most services let you resubscribe instantly. Your account data, watch history, and playlists are usually saved for months after cancellation. Pausing is also an option with many providers if you’re on the fence. You’re not burning a bridge by canceling.

Should I audit subscriptions billed to different cards separately?
No. Pull statements from every card and bank account you use. Subscriptions spread across multiple cards are harder to spot, which is exactly why they survive so long. One combined list gives you the full picture.

Do annual subscriptions count, or just monthly ones?
Both. Annual subscriptions are actually more important to catch because a single missed renewal can cost $100 or more in one hit. According to a 2024 CFPB report on subscription billing practices, consumers often find annual auto-renewals harder to cancel than monthly ones, which is another reason to calendar those dates well in advance.

    Your next fifteen minutes

A quarterly audit of your subscriptions takes less time than making dinner. Fifteen minutes, four times a year, and you keep hundreds of dollars from slipping away unnoticed. Pull three statements, sort each charge into keep, pause, or cancel, set your calendar reminders, and redirect the savings somewhere useful.

If you want one place to see your subscriptions, next-charge dates, and how those cuts affect what’s safe to spend before payday, Amppfy is free and takes about ten minutes to set up at amppfy.com/app/. Grab your phone, set a timer, and run your first audit this week.
