Two weeks of work, then a short wait, then a Tuesday. That’s the rhythm of a federal paycheck. Once you can see the whole year laid out, it stops feeling unpredictable.

This guide gives you the full federal pay period calendar for 2027. It lists all 26 pay periods with their start dates, end dates, and official pay dates. It also flags the two months with a third payday and explains why your agency’s calendar might number things differently.

The goal is calm, ordinary planning. You’ll know when money arrives, which bills land before it, and where your lowest-cash day sits. No guessing, no scrambling the week before rent. Keep this page handy, or copy the dates into whatever calendar you already check.

The 2027 federal pay period calendar

Each period runs two weeks, Sunday through Saturday. The numbering below follows leave year 2027, matching the USDA National Finance Center’s Form NFC-1217, Pay Period Calendar 2027. Pay period 1 starts Sunday, January 10, 2027.

Pay dates follow the Interior Business Center (IBC) rule: “the official pay date for all agencies is the second Tuesday following the end of the pay period.”

    PP26 Dec 26, 2027 Jan 8, 2028 Jan 18, 2028

The 2028 leave year begins Sunday, January 9, 2028.

    How federal pay periods work

The arithmetic is simple. You work 14 days, Sunday to Saturday. Payroll then processes your time. Your official pay date is the second Tuesday after the period closes, which works out to 10 days after that final Saturday.

Take PP01. It ends Saturday, January 23. The first Tuesday after is January 26. The second is February 2. That’s your pay date.

Direct deposits at many agencies land a few days before the official Tuesday. The exact timing depends on your payroll provider and your bank. Check your provider’s calendar (NFC, IBC, GSA, or DFAS) for your actual deposit window.

    Why the labels don’t match

IBC’s own 2027 calendar numbers periods by the year of the pay date, not the leave year. So IBC’s “pay period 27-02” ends Saturday, January 9, 2027. The period this table calls PP01 shows up on IBC’s calendar as 27-03. The dates are identical. Only the labels differ. Use your agency’s calendar for the label, and use the dates to plan.

Paydays that move: federal holidays in 2027

Here’s the calm part. None of the 26 official pay dates in 2027 falls on a federal holiday. So none of them moves.

These are the 2027 federal holidays, per OPM’s federal holidays page:

    • Fri, Jan 1: New Year’s Day
    • Mon, Jan 18: Martin Luther King Jr. Day
    • Mon, Feb 15: Washington’s Birthday
    • Mon, May 31: Memorial Day
    • Fri, Jun 18: Juneteenth (observed)
    • Mon, Jul 5: Independence Day (observed)
    • Mon, Sep 6: Labor Day
    • Mon, Oct 11: Columbus Day
    • Thu, Nov 11: Veterans Day
    • Thu, Nov 25: Thanksgiving
    • Fri, Dec 24: Christmas Day (observed)
    • Fri, Dec 31: New Year’s Day 2028 (observed)

Holidays can still nudge your bills, though. A Monday holiday may delay a bank transfer or an autopay by a day. If a bill is due the day after a long weekend, give it a little room. Paying it a day early costs you nothing.

Months with three pay dates in 2027

Twenty-six paydays across twelve months means two months get a bonus. Under the IBC rule, those months are:

    • March 2027: Mar 2, Mar 16, Mar 30
    • August 2027: Aug 3, Aug 17, Aug 31

Every other month has two pay dates.

The math explains why this matters. Most people budget monthly bills against two paychecks. In March and August, a full third check arrives with no new rent or car payment attached. That’s real breathing room, not a windfall to spend by accident.

Decide now what each third check is for. A few honest options:

    • Top up your emergency fund or safety cushion
    • Pay down a credit card balance
    • Prepay a quarterly or annual bill, like car insurance
    • Fund a goal you keep pushing back, like a trip

Writing the decision down in January makes March easy.

Planning bills around a biweekly federal paycheck

Bills come monthly. Pay comes every two weeks. That mismatch is the whole reason the week before payday can feel tight. The fix is to stop looking at the month and start looking at the gap: from now until the next pay date.

    Find your lowest point

List every bill due before your next Tuesday payday. Subtract them from what’s in checking today. The result is your lowest point before payday. If rent hits on the 1st and your check arrives on the 2nd, as it does in February, your low point falls on the 1st. That’s the day to plan around.

    The Safe-to-Spend™ math

Here’s one way to turn that into a single number:

    Line Amount
    Cash available $3,412
Bills due before payday − $1,240
    Planned savings − $400
    Safety cushion − $500
    Safe-to-Spend™ $1,272

That $1,272 covers groceries, gas, and everything else until the next deposit. If you’d rather not redo this by hand, Amppfy’s bills and paydays calendar marks your lowest point before payday and sends a heads-up the day before a bill. You type balances in yourself, so there’s no bank login involved.

The 2026 calendar and the 2027 biweekly Friday calendar

If you’re still finishing out this year, the federal pay period calendar for 2026 lists every pay period and payday for 2026. It’s useful for spotting your last 2026 deposit and how it hands off to February 2, 2027.

Many federal households have a partner in the private sector, often paid on Fridays. Two different pay rhythms in one home can make bill timing confusing. The biweekly pay calendar for 2027 covers both Friday schedules. Line it up next to this federal payroll calendar and you’ll see every deposit coming into the house.

A practical step: mark both sets of paydays on one shared calendar. Then assign each big bill to the paycheck that lands closest before it. Rent might belong to one check, utilities and the car payment to another. Once it’s assigned, you don’t have to think about it again.

For your agency’s official version, check the NFC Pay Period Calendar page at nfc.usda.gov or the IBC payroll calendars at doi.gov/ibc.

    FAQ

How many pay periods are in 2027?

There are 26 pay periods in leave year 2027. PP01 starts Sunday, January 10, 2027, and PP26 ends Saturday, January 8, 2028. Each one is two weeks long, Sunday through Saturday.

When is the first federal payday of 2027?

Under the IBC rule, the first official pay date for leave year 2027 is Tuesday, February 2, 2027. That pays for PP01, January 10 to January 23. Your direct deposit may arrive a few days earlier, so check your payroll provider’s calendar.

    Which months have three paydays?

March 2027 (Mar 2, 16, and 30) and August 2027 (Aug 3, 17, and 31). Every other month has two. Plan in advance what each third check will do.

Why does my agency’s calendar show different pay period numbers?

Some calendars number by leave year, like NFC. Others, like IBC, number by the year of the pay date. That’s why the period called PP01 here appears as 27-03 on IBC’s calendar. The dates match, so use your agency’s label and these dates.

    Your next ten minutes

The 2027 schedule is steady. Twenty-six paydays, all on Tuesdays, none moved by a holiday. Two extra checks in March and August. Once you know your lowest point before each payday, the rest is plain arithmetic.

Take ten minutes this week. Copy your 2027 pay dates into your calendar, assign each big bill to a paycheck, and decide what the March and August checks are for.
