Payday is nine days out. Your bank app says $3,412. That looks like plenty, until rent, the car payment, and a streaming renewal all land before Friday. The balance is honest, but it doesn’t answer the question you actually care about: how much of this can I spend right now without a problem later?

A Safe-to-Spend™ calculator answers that question with four lines of arithmetic. You don’t need a spreadsheet, a bank login, or a budgeting philosophy. You need a pen, a notes app, or the back of an envelope, plus about five minutes.

This page is the calculation itself. There’s no form to fill in and nothing to download. You’ll do the math by hand with one worked example, then see how the result shifts when real life gets involved: a bill that falls after payday, a month you skip savings, or a cushion set to zero.

Amppfy on an iPhone showing the Safe-to-Spend™ number with the status scale and the math under it

If you’ve quit a budgeting app because the bank sync broke or the upkeep wore you down, this approach should feel lighter. It only looks at the stretch between now and your next paycheck, and that short window is easier to manage.

    What Safe-to-Spend™ means

Safe-to-Spend™ is the money you can use freely between today and your next payday. It’s not your balance, and it’s not a monthly budget category. It’s what remains after the near-term obligations are set aside.

The idea rests on one boundary: payday. Everything before it counts. Everything after it waits for the next paycheck, which will cover it. This is why the number stays small and readable. You aren’t planning the whole year, just the next week or two.

    Four things go into it:

    • Available cash: what’s in your checking and any account you’d actually spend from.
    • Bills due before payday: only the ones that will charge before your next deposit.
    • Planned savings: the amount you intend to move to goals this pay cycle.
    • Cushion: a buffer you choose for surprises, like a pharmacy run or a higher utility bill.

“Available” matters here. Your bank may show two balances: a current balance and an available balance that subtracts pending holds. The CFPB has flagged surprise overdraft fees charged when a purchase was authorized on a sufficient available balance but the account had dropped by the time it settled[1], often because of pending transactions. Use the lower, available figure. It’s the honest one.

The result is one number you can glance at before buying groceries or saying yes to dinner out. If it’s positive, you’re fine. If it’s small, you know to slow down. No guesswork.

    The four-line math, worked

Here’s the full calculation. Copy it into your notes app and swap in your own figures.

    Line What it is Amount
    1. Cash Available balance across spending accounts $3,412
    2. Bills Bills due before payday − $1,240
    3. Savings Planned savings this cycle − $400
    4. Cushion Your chosen buffer − $500
    Result Safe-to-Spend™ $1,272

    In one line: $3,412 cash − $1,240 bills due before payday − $400 planned savings − $500 cushion = $1,272 Safe-to-Spend™.

Walk through it step by step:

    1. Confirm your balances. Open each account you spend from. Write down the available balance, not the current one. This takes about 30 seconds per account.
    2. List bills with dates. Check your calendar, email receipts, and recent statements. Write each bill and its due date.
    3. Keep only bills due before payday. Cross out anything dated on or after your next deposit. Add the rest. In the example, that total is $1,240.
    4. Subtract savings. Decide what you’ll move to goals this cycle. Here it’s $400.
    5. Subtract your cushion. Pick a figure that lets you sleep. Here it’s $500.

That’s it. $1,272 is yours to spend over the next nine days. Divide it by nine and you get about $141 a day, which is a handy gut check if you like daily figures.

The math is simple on purpose. When you can see every line, you can trust the result, and you can spot the error if one sneaks in.

    Where the number goes wrong

The calculation rarely breaks because of arithmetic. It breaks because one of the four lines holds the wrong figure. Here are the three most common slips and what each one does to the result.

A bill that lands after payday

Say your $180 phone bill is included in the $1,240, but it actually charges the day after payday. It doesn’t belong on this list. Your next paycheck covers it.

Remove it, and the bills line becomes $1,060:

    $3,412 − $1,060 − $400 − $500 = $1,452

Your number rises by $180. Counting later bills doesn’t make you safer. It just makes you feel poorer than you are, which can push you toward pulling from savings for no reason. For more on sorting dates, see this guide on counting only the bills due before payday.

The opposite slip hurts more. Miss a bill that does land before payday, and your number is inflated. That’s how a “fine” balance turns into an overdraft. As of October 2026, there is no federal cap on overdraft fees: Congress disapproved the CFPB’s 2024 overdraft rule in May 2025, and that rule has no force or effect[2]. Your bank sets its own fee, so check your bank’s fee schedule directly.

    Skipping savings

Leave savings out and the result jumps:

    $3,412 − $1,240 − $0 − $500 = $1,672

That extra $400 looks like spending money. It isn’t, unless you’ve decided to pause saving this cycle. Pausing is a valid choice in a tight month. The problem is pausing by accident, then wondering where the goal went. If you skip, make it a decision, not a side effect of the math.

    A zero cushion

Set the cushion to nothing and you get:

    $3,412 − $1,240 − $400 − $0 = $1,772

The number is bigger, but it has no give. One higher-than-usual electric bill or a forgotten annual renewal eats into money you’ve already spent. A cushion doesn’t need to be large. Even $100 to $200 absorbs small surprises. Pick a size that matches how predictable your month is: steadier bills, smaller cushion.

Doing it by hand vs letting an app do it daily

Doing it by hand is fine. Truly. The four lines don’t change because a computer runs them. A notes app, a sticky note on the fridge, or a page in a planner all work.

The hand method has real advantages:

    • You see every figure, so nothing is hidden.
    • It costs nothing and needs no account.
    • It builds your sense of where your money goes in a given week.

It also has limits. The number is only fresh the moment you calculate it. Spend $60 at the store, and your note is now wrong until you redo it. Bills shift dates. A subscription renews earlier than you remembered. If you share bills with a partner, you both need the same figure, which means one of you does the math and texts it over.

An app only repeats the math daily. That’s the whole difference. It holds your bills, paydays, and savings goals so you don’t rewrite them each time, and it recalculates when something changes. A good one still shows the four lines under the number, so you can check it the same way you’d check your own work.

Amppfy works this way. You type in your balances yourself, with no bank login and no transaction import, and the four-line math sits under the Safe-to-Spend™ number. It also marks the lowest-cash day before payday on a bills calendar and sends a calm heads-up the day before a bill. A partner can get their own login and see the same number, while private accounts stay private. It’s free on iPhone and the web.

Here’s a simple way to decide. If you recalculate once a week and your bills rarely surprise you, hand math is enough. If you find yourself redoing it every few days, or you’re coordinating with a partner, let a tool carry the repetition. Either way, a 10-minute weekly check-in keeps the inputs honest.

    FAQ

What counts as “available cash” in the calculation?

Use the available balance from any account you’d actually spend from, usually checking. Leave out savings accounts you don’t touch, retirement accounts, and credit card limits. Credit isn’t cash. If a deposit is pending and not yet available, don’t count it until it is.

Should I include credit card payments as bills?

Yes, if the payment is due before payday. Add the amount you plan to pay, whether that’s the full statement balance or the minimum. New card purchases don’t go on the bills line, since they’re paid next statement. They do reduce your room to spend, so keep them in mind.

How big should my cushion be?

Big enough to cover one small surprise without stress. For many households on a steady paycheck, a few hundred dollars works. If your income or bills vary a lot, go larger. You can adjust it each cycle. The cushion is yours to set, not a rule.

What if my Safe-to-Spend™ number is negative?

Then your bills, savings, and cushion add up to more than your cash before payday. Start with the softest line. Lower the cushion or pause savings this cycle. Next, check whether any bill can move past payday by asking the company for a new due date. A negative number is information, not a verdict. It tells you early, while there’s still time to adjust.

Four lines. Cash, minus bills due before payday, minus savings, minus a cushion. That’s the entire Safe-to-Spend™ calculator, and you can run it on paper in five minutes tonight.

The figure is only as good as its inputs. Use available balances. Count only bills dated before your next paycheck. Treat savings as a decision. Keep a little give in the cushion. Get those right and the number will match the week you actually live.

Try it once by hand this week. If you’d rather not redo it every few days, the same math runs daily in the Safe-to-Spend™ view in Amppfy, with every line printed underneath.
