Your Social Security deposit follows a fixed pattern. Once you know which pattern applies to you, you can mark every payday for the next year in about ten minutes.

This guide covers who gets paid when, what shifts around weekends and holidays, and how to set your bills around the date the money arrives. It also includes full date tables for the rest of 2026 and all of 2027.

    The short answer

Most people are paid on a Wednesday, and your birthday decides which one:

    • Born on the 1st-10th: second Wednesday of the month
    • Born on the 11th-20th: third Wednesday of the month
    • Born on the 21st-31st: fourth Wednesday of the month
    • Got Social Security before May 1997: the 3rd of the month
    • Get both Social Security and SSI: Social Security on the 3rd, SSI on the 1st
    • SSI only: the 1st of the month

If a payment date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, you’re paid the business day before. If your money doesn’t show up on the expected date, the SSA asks you to wait three more mailing days before you contact them.

That’s the whole system. The rest of this guide is detail and dates.

How the Social Security payment schedule works

The SSA splits payments across the month so it isn’t sending tens of millions of deposits on a single day. The official schedule of benefit payments for 2026 and the 2027 payment schedule[1] both use the same rules.

The birthday that counts belongs to the person whose work record the benefit comes from. In most cases, that’s you. If you get spousal or survivor benefits, use the birthday of the worker whose record you’re paid on. If you’re married to someone born on the 25th, your spousal check would arrive on the fourth Wednesday, even if your own birthday is the 5th.

There are two exceptions to the Wednesday pattern:

    1. Early filers. If you started receiving Social Security before May 1997, you’re paid on the 3rd. That doesn’t change, even if you move or switch banks.
    2. Dual recipients. If you get both Social Security and SSI, your Social Security arrives on the 3rd and SSI arrives on the 1st.

SSI on its own is always scheduled for the 1st. Each rule works like a fixed slot on a calendar. Your payment lands in the same slot every month, and only weekends or holidays move it earlier.

    The remaining 2026 payment dates

Here are the remaining months of 2026. Dates already reflect weekend and holiday shifts.

    Month SSI (1st) Pre-1997 / dual (3rd) Born 1st-10th Born 11th-20th Born 21st-31st
October 2026 Thu, Oct 1 Fri, Oct 2 Wed, Oct 14 Wed, Oct 21 Wed, Oct 28
November 2026 Fri, Oct 30 Tue, Nov 3 Tue, Nov 10 Wed, Nov 18 Wed, Nov 25
December 2026 Tue, Dec 1 Thu, Dec 3 Wed, Dec 9 Wed, Dec 16 Wed, Dec 23

A few things to notice. October’s third-of-the-month payment moved to Friday, October 2 because October 3 is a Saturday. November’s SSI payment arrives on October 30 because November 1 is a Sunday. The second-Wednesday payment in November moves to Tuesday, November 10, because November 11 is Veterans Day.

December also brings a second SSI deposit on Thursday, December 31. That’s January’s payment, sent early because January 1, 2027 is New Year’s Day. It’s not extra money. It has to cover all of January. The pattern is explained in detail in why December brings two SSI checks and January none.

    Every 2027 payment date

For 2027, the SSA announced a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment[2], so your deposits starting in January will look a little larger. These Social Security direct deposit dates already include every weekend and holiday shift.

    Month SSI (1st) Pre-1997 / dual (3rd) Born 1st-10th Born 11th-20th Born 21st-31st

March Mon, Mar 1 Wed, Mar 3 Wed, Mar 10 Wed, Mar 17 Wed, Mar 24
April Thu, Apr 1 Fri, Apr 2 Wed, Apr 14 Wed, Apr 21 Wed, Apr 28

December Wed, Dec 1 Fri, Dec 3 Wed, Dec 8 Wed, Dec 15 Wed, Dec 22

January 2028’s SSI payment arrives on Friday, December 31, 2027. If you’d like to see these grouped by birthday, the full 2027 Social Security schedule by birthday breaks them out that way.

What changes on weekends and holidays

The rule is simple. If a payment date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, the money arrives on the business day before. Payments always move earlier, never later.

In 2027, this matters most for SSI and for people paid on the 3rd. Here’s how it plays out:

    • May 2027: May 1 is a Saturday, so SSI arrives Friday, April 30.
    • August 2027: August 1 is a Sunday, so SSI arrives Friday, July 30.
    • October 2027: October 3 is a Sunday, so the 3rd-of-month payment arrives Friday, October 1.

In each of those months, April and July show two SSI deposits, and the following month shows none. The math still works out the same. You get twelve payments a year, but a few arrive at the end of the month before. To avoid confusion, label that early deposit in your notes as next month’s money. That way, it doesn’t look like a windfall.

Wednesday payments rarely move. The exception in this window is Veterans Day 2026, which shifts one Wednesday to Tuesday, November 10.

What time banks post a Social Security deposit

The SSA doesn’t publish a clock time for deposits. Banks post the money on the payment date, but each bank decides when during that day it shows up in your account. Some banks post overnight, while others post later in the morning.

Some banks and credit unions also advertise early availability of government payments on their own websites. Those programs are set by each bank, not by the SSA. Check your bank’s own page for its current terms, as of October 2026. If you’d like to compare, see what time direct deposit hits, bank by bank.

If the payment hasn’t arrived by the end of the expected day, don’t panic. The SSA’s guidance is to allow three additional mailing days before you contact them.

Planning bills around the landing date

Once you know your date, the next step is putting your bills on the right side of it. This takes about fifteen minutes.

    1. Write down your payment date for the next three months from the tables above.
    2. List every bill with its due date. This includes rent, utilities, phone, insurance, and subscriptions.
    3. Split them into two groups: bills due before your next deposit and bills due after.
    4. Ask to move awkward due dates. Many billers let you choose your due date. A bill due on the 10th when you’re paid on the fourth Wednesday is the classic problem to fix.

Here’s an example. Say you were born on the 24th, so your payment arrives on the fourth Wednesday. In January 2027, that’s January 27. Your next deposit is February 24. Any bill due between January 27 and February 23 has to come out of the January 27 deposit.

Fourth-Wednesday months vary in length. The gap from December 23, 2026 to January 27, 2027 is five weeks. If you know that in advance, you can set a little extra aside in December instead of finding out mid-January.

What is safe to spend once it lands

A deposit isn’t all yours to spend. Part of it is already promised to bills, and seeing that clearly is what keeps the month calm.

    Here’s the arithmetic. Imagine a $2,000 deposit:

    Line What it is Amount
Deposit Money that just landed $2,000
Bills before next payment Rent, utilities, phone, insurance − $1,350
Savings Set aside first, not last − $150
Cushion Buffer for surprises − $100
Safe to spend Groceries, gas, everything else $400

That $400 has to last until the next deposit, not just until the weekend. If you’re four weeks out, that’s about $100 a week.

The order matters. Bills come first because they’re fixed. Savings come second, because what’s left over at the end of the month tends to be zero. The cushion comes third, so a $60 pharmacy copay doesn’t eat into rent. Amppfy runs this same four-line math and calls the result your Safe-to-Spend™ number. It also shows the lowest-cash day on a month calendar, so you can see the tight week before it happens.

    FAQ

Does my birthday or my spouse’s birthday decide my payment date?

It’s the birthday of the worker whose record you’re paid on. For your own retirement benefit, that’s your own birthday. For spousal or survivor benefits, use the worker’s birthday.

Why did I get two SSI payments in one month?

When the 1st falls on a weekend or holiday, SSI is paid the business day before. That can land in the previous month. December 2026 includes January’s payment on December 31, and April and July 2027 each include the next month’s payment.

My payment didn’t arrive on schedule. What should I do?

First, check the tables above to confirm your date, including any holiday shift. If it’s correct and the money still hasn’t arrived, the SSA asks you to allow three more mailing days before contacting them.

Will the 2027 increase change my payment dates?

No. The 3.6% adjustment changes the amount you receive, not the schedule. Your birthday rule, the 3rd, and SSI on the 1st all stay the same.

Benefits rise 3.6% with the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment; see what the 2027 COLA means for your monthly plan.

Your date is set by one rule, and holidays only move it earlier. Once the deposit lands, bills due before the next payment come out first, then savings, then a cushion. What’s left is yours to spend without second-guessing. If you’d like to see that number without doing the math each month, take ten minutes this week to add your bills and paydays in Amppfy.
